| Curriculum and Methods I Use Math - I'm was using Math-U-See for 1st - 3rd and 4th - 6th. It has videos that come with it that instructs and is helpful for the child to see someone else reinforcing what you are teaching. I'm not so strict on the skip counting, I just want them to be familar because it will help them learn multiplication quicker. I don't want them to count thier fingers. I make my own flash cards and write the answer with a pencil on the back so they can check themselves. They are pretty honest and find it a challenging game because they can put the ones they get right in a separate pile, makes them feel good to see how many more they get right each time. 2005 - I recently purchased Alpha Omega Lifepac, for added practice. Practice really does make perfect. I will use the Math- U -See for extra work when needed. Language Arts - I have use "The Writing Road to Reading" for K - 6th grade, by Romalda Bishop Spalding with Walter T. Spalding until recently. It's a very closely instructed method but very effective. Also instead of using a curriculum like Abeka, I was using "Grammar Works"for K - 8th Grade, by Jay W. Patterson with "The Writing Road to Reading". I recently pruchases Lifepacs for this also. I can reinforce or fill in the blanks with what I used before. Social Studies and Science - School Year 2004 - 2005 - We have a unit study in which we combine these two subjects. We do research, give oral and written report, investigate interests, etc. I have been using Creation Science as a guide. We have started with the beginning of creation, from planets and are moving through each day of creation. We are almost done and have been reading through It Couldn't Just Happen. Very good book! School Year 2005 -2006 - I found a book that starts at Creation and goes through The Resurrection of Christ, The Mystery of History. That was my plan to go through history in cronological order instead of skipping around. She has activities for all ages and encourages keeping a timeline. We are going to put the time line on card paper and post it up in order in my son's room. You also can make flash cards for each section to use for review. It is a Christian perspective. For Sceince my oder daughter (7th grade) is using Apologia. The other two are using Lyriacal Science. They are learning the songs and then reading and doing the activities. The singing makes it fun and they remember it all better. Reading - I pick out books that go along with our unit study and some that they are interested in. They love reading. Bible Study Sometimes we study from "Manners Made Easy", but most times we study straight from the Holy Bible. There are so many stories and advice. When my children were small, I would learn certain stories very well, and that would be their bedtimes stories. My oldest daughter's favorite when she was about 4 years old was the story of Joseph, one of the longest to tell. My oldest son loves the story of Samson and Samuel, we broke those down into several study sessions. It requires extra bible study time, but well worth it for you and your children. We also like to sing hymns together. Many nights I have sang hymns to them as they fall asleep. Those are special memories for me! August 2005 - We are getting close to finishing Genesis. Were going to go straight through the bible instead of skipping around for now. |
